About Us
My abuela's turning 91 years old. So...lights, camera, mayhem- it's showbiz time! We call ourselves the Cuban ‘Laverne & Chur-Lee.’ On a mission to celebrate our Cuban culture with plenty of 'azucar'! We proudly hail from Hialeah in the heart of Miami, FL.
Monique alvarez
Monique is the 'Chur-lee' to her grandmother’s 'Laverne.' Monique is the creator of “My Abuela in Miami and the writer/director of its sketch comedy short series. Monique is also the co-creator (with fellow co-creator Jessica Lee Williamson) of ‘Hialeah: Dade F*ckin County’ family comedy in the works at IMDB TV and Amazon Studios.
Monique is a classically trained actress, writer and filmmaker. “Abuela shows us that it’s never too late to dream your dream, and you’re never too old to stay young,” says Monique, who grew up on cortaditos and pan cubano in Hialeah, FL. With roots in theater and improv comedy, she brings a certain kind of spontaneity to her stories. She filmed this sketch comedy series with one rule in mind: the best version of someone, is their authentic self, even if it means dabbing on some Fabuloso home cleaner as perfume.
Louise Alvarez
Louise AKA 'Laverne' was born in Havana, Cuba. At the cusp of turning 92 years young, Louise is beginning a new chapter in her life: starring as Abuela in all things “My Abuela in Miami,” and thus fulfilling the unrequited dream of being an actress she once had as a young woman when she immigrated to New York City.
Growing up in Cuba, Louise spent much of her youth living inside a convent with her younger sister. When she was 16 years old, she immigrated to NYC where fate would quickly unite her with the love of her life and fellow Havana-native, Charles Alvarez. The rest is history. Loving kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. A glamorous career as a nail technician. The dazzling matriarch to us all. Except one thing was missing...the closest she ever got to showbiz was through the ‘starlets garments’ she would sow inside a Manhattan garment factory throughout her 20’s. That is, until now. With the help of her granddaughter, Monique a ‘star is being born’ and Louise is now living a modern version of her lifelong wish.
